LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — So far, 137 homeless have moved on from their makeshift, curbside shelters in Las Vegas. Their success stories are a point of pride for the mayor, but her struggle is far from over.
At a Thursday news conference, Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley said the city has helped 137 people transition out of homelessness since April. The city touted several programs, including a recuperative care center and a community court, but Berkley reiterated that the city is interested in helping those who are able and prepared to help themselves.
“It is not my goal to sustain people on the streets,” she said. “It is my goal to get people off the streets and self-sustaining. And you know, we’re slowly moving in that direction.”
