DECATUR, Ga. — Members of the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights‘ Decolonize Decatur Committee unveiled a new historical marker on the Decatur Square on Friday, Aug. 21, honoring the Muscogee (Creek) people and acknowledging their forced removal from ancestral lands.
The marker also recognizes the Oct. 19, 2021, removal of what activists called the “genocide cannon.”
DeKalb County installed the marker, which features text written by retired Emory University English professor Craig Womack, who is Muscogee. Its text says the Muscogee (Creek) people were forcibly removed from their Georgia and Alabama homelands, primarily in the 1820s and 1830s…
