Airdrie Stud reported that its upward-moving stallion Girvin, who won the 2017 Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1), died suddenly Aug. 8 at the farm near Midway, Ky. He was 12.
Airdrie’s Bret Jones, who is attending the races at Saratoga Race Course this weekend, noted it’s a difficult, “sudden and unexpected” loss. The cause of death is not yet known. A necropsy will be conducted.
Girvin had completed his eighth season at stud in a stallion career that began in 2019 at David O’Farrell’s Ocala Stud in Florida before a move to Airdrie Stud ahead of the 2023 breeding season. His stud fee has increased from an initial $7,500 to $30,000 this year.
