A new traffic pattern is scheduled to open in a major Lexington traffic corridor later this week as a construction project in the area advances to its next phase, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
New reduced conflict U-turn intersections, known as R-CUTs, will open in the Richmond Road and Athens-Boonesboro Road corridor at the Ellerslie Park Boulevard and Hays Boulevard intersections on Friday, Sept. 18. An R-CUT intersection is a special type of traffic pattern that eliminates the possibility of left turns and replaces them with U-turns.
The intersections will require motorists to turn right onto the main road from side streets. Those who want to turn left from a main road will instead turn right onto a side street and make a U-turn.
The $13.2 million Richmond Road project will extend from Yorkshire Boulevard and Squires Road to Brenda Cowan Elementary. The transportation cabinet said three of the four R-CUT intersections will feature traffic signals once construction is complete…
