Lexington police warn of surge in gun thefts from vehicles

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Lexington police say they are seeing an increase in reports of guns being stolen from vehicles.

In just one month, 25 guns were stolen, with 17 of those guns being taken from unlocked vehicles. The trend prompted Lexington police to issue a public service announcement warning residents and explaining that it can be a catalyst for other crimes.

“Looking at over the last 10 years or so, we’re seeing that the source being vehicle thefts has tripled in terms of guns being stolen,” said Lexington Police Sgt. Bige Towery.

Thieves targeting unlocked vehicles

“They go up and down streets at night, and whether its a car that’s parked on the street or in a driveway, they’re looking to see first of all, if there’s anything in the car and if its unlocked,” Towery said. “The importance that we try to stress is number one, lock your car, and number two, do not leave things visible in your car.”…
