LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Aging infrastructure is causing problems for people wanting to go to the pool this Memorial Day. Lincoln Parks and Rec said that six of Lincoln’s nine pools have been closed due to a combination of aging infrastructure, extreme heat and the high-capacity crowds: Ballard, University Place, Irving, Eden, Highlands and Star City Shores.
The heat brought huge crowds, and at some locations the combination of at-capacity swimmer load and high temperatures overwhelmed the filtration and chemical systems.
According to Lincoln Parks and Rec, more swimmers means the filters are working harder and sanitizers get used up faster. In extreme heat, that can happen more quickly. Staff monitored conditions and closed pools whenever water quality moved outside official standards…
