LINCOLN, Neb. — While school is out for students, school resource officers along with middle and high school administrators gathered at North Star High School Wednesday for a daylong training event to learn more about threat assessments.
The training focused on identifying what is an actual threat versus what a student may say as part of their autism or other neurodivergent behaviors.
“A student may express something out of exasperation, like, get me out of math class or I’m going to kill everybody. And the goal of the student is to get out of math class. And it’s perceived as the goal is to kill everybody. it’s really important that the people on the team be able to determine what is an actual threat and what is a statement that is more autistic in where it comes from,” said Dr. Stephanie Leite, a clinical and forensic psychologist…
