Nebraska teen receives probation in derailment of BNSF train

LINCOLN, Neb. — A 19-year-old Nebraska man has received five years of probation for an incident in which he derailed a BNSF train and recorded video of the incident.

Zachary Hertzler received the sentence for one count of criminal mischief costing over $5,000, KOLN-TV reports. An additional count of criminal mischief was dropped.

Hertzler, who was convicted in April, could have received up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine [see “Nebraska teen convicted ….,” Trains.com, April 7, 2026]. He was a minor at the time of the April 2024 incident, but a judge ruled last year that he could be tried as an adult…
