LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A powerful ridge of high pressure is locking in hot and dry weather across Nebraska this week. Expect mainly sunny skies nearly every day with virtually no chance of rain through the weekend.
Early in the week, Lincoln will see seasonal highs around 90 degrees on Monday and Tuesday — fairly typical for mid-July. But temperatures climb through Friday, with the hottest stretch arriving late this week and into the weekend. Lincoln’s forecast highs reach 96, 97, and 96 degrees Friday through Sunday.
What to Watch
Heat index values will feel dangerous. Heat index values will hover around 100 degrees nearly every day. Warm overnight lows — struggling to reach 75 degrees Friday onward — mean your body won’t get relief even after the sun sets.
UV radiation will be very high. UV index values will reach 9 to 10 this week. Sunburn can happen in as little as 15 minutes without protection. If you’re heading to the pool, reapply sunscreen every two hours.
Gusty winds increase fire concerns. Wednesday could see gusts up to 40-45 mph across the Sandhills and Panhandle. Combined with hot, dry conditions, fire weather concerns will be elevated, especially across northwestern Nebraska.
Rain chances remain below 5%. Don’t expect any meaningful moisture through at least next week.
