LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Severe Weather Center continues to warn of dangerous heat across Nebraska through Monday, with heat indices climbing up around 110 to 120 degrees in some areas.
Most of eastern Nebraska is under an Extreme Heat Warning now – including Lincoln – until 9PM Sunday night. Heat index readings as high as 110-115° or so will be possible, especially again by Sunday afternoon.
Northeast and central Nebraska will be under the Extreme Heat Warning until 7AM Monday morning, while Heat Advisories cover the rest of the state.
Sunday: Another Dangerous Day
Sunday is shaping up to be another dangerous day of heat this weekend. Temperatures will climb into the upper-90s to low 100s, but the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like 105 to 115 degrees statewide.
What to expect:
- Heat indices of 105-110+ degrees across the state
- Overnight lows only dropping to near 80 degrees in some areas, making it difficult to cool homes without air conditioning
- Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies
Storms Possible Sunday Night Into Monday Morning
There is a small chance (15-30%) of isolated severe thunderstorms developing Sunday night and into Monday morning. If storms do develop, damaging wind will be the primary threat — not hail or heavy rain.
These storms would likely move from northeast to southeast during the evening hours. Given the extreme heat and humidity, any storms that form could produce gusty winds, so stay weather aware Sunday evening.
Monday: Still Very Hot, But Clouds Try to Cool
Monday will remain hot with highs in the mid-90s to low 100s across the state. However, a cold front will begin moving into the region, which should help temperatures trend down ever so slightly.
