Southeast Nebraska remains under an Extreme Heat Warning through 9 p.m. Sunday, with dangerously high temperatures and heat index values expected to reach 110 to 112 degrees in Lincoln. A Heat Advisory will then remain in effect through 10 p.m. Monday, as another day of dangerous heat is forecast.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, the prolonged heat event poses a significant risk for heat-related illness, especially because overnight temperatures will only fall into the upper 70s, providing little opportunity for recovery. The agency says heat illness becomes increasingly common during multi-day stretches of extreme heat and urges residents to stay hydrated, spend time in air-conditioned buildings, and limit strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.
The National Weather Service’s decision support briefing indicates heat index values across eastern Nebraska could peak between 105 and 115 degrees today and Monday, with isolated locations approaching 118 degrees. Forecasters are also monitoring the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon and evening.
