OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A First Alert 6 investigation finds serious questions into why a prisoner who died at the Douglas County Correctional Center was in jail in the first place. Last week, a grand jury found no criminal conduct by corrections staff.
But the prisoner’s mother believes he might still be alive if not for a warrant that never got carried out.
A mental health crisis
Earlier this year, when 33-year-old Edward Gifford suffered what his mother described as a mental breakdown, Janelle Scott says she called a state Health and Human Services phone number. Omaha police showed up instead.
