LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Hot, humid, and breezy conditions are set to return to the area as we head into the day on Friday. As a warm front lifts north into the area, we’ll see a return to more summer-like conditions, including the chance for showers and storms with isolated strong to severe storms possible for eastern Nebraska.
Rain and Storms Possible Thursday Night
Another round of showers and thunderstorms will be possible into Thursday evening and Thursday night – this round primarily focused on western and northern parts of the state. Some isolated strong storms will be possible across parts of southwestern Nebraska into the Panhandle. Hail and wind are expected to be the primary threats, to go along with some areas of heavy rain.
For Lincoln and eastern Nebraska, quieter conditions are expected tonight. Look for clouds to return to the area this evening and overnight tonight, with the potential for more areas of fog, and possibly some dense fog at times across the area. Overnight lows tonight will remain quite warm thanks to the high humidity. Look for temperatures to only dip down into the 60s and low 70s.
What to Expect Friday
Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s to low-90s across the state, with the hottest readings in the southern portions of Nebraska. The high humidity will make it feel even warmer — a few degrees hotter than the actual temperature. It’ll be breezy too, with south and southwest winds gusting up to 25 to 35 MPH.
The real story Friday is the storm threat. As a warm front pushes north through the state, conditions will become favorable for thunderstorm development late in the afternoon and into the evening. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined parts of eastern and northeastern Nebraska with a marginal risk for severe weather – meaning isolated severe storms are possible.
The main threat with any storms will be damaging wind gusts. While most storms should be isolated, there is a small chance — around 5% — that a storm could be severe. Heavy rainfall is also possible under any storm that develops.
Saturday: Cooler with Game Day Weather
Our hotter weather will be short lived, as a cold front drops through the area Friday night into Saturday, ushering in much cooler air for Saturday. Expect mostly cloudy to cloudy skies with highs in the 70s to low 80s — a significant drop from Friday’s heat.
If you’re planning to tailgate for the Husker game Saturday evening at 6:15 p.m., rain chances will be around in the afternoon. The best chance for rain looks to come late Saturday evening and into the night, so the game itself could see some wet conditions. A concert is scheduled to follow the game, so keep an eye on conditions if you’re planning to stay for that.
Sunday: More Rain Possible
Rain chances will continue into Sunday as additional weather systems move through the area. Sunday looks particularly wet, with more light rain possible throughout the day. Highs Sunday will be in the 60s to low 70s.
Next Week: Fall-Like Days, But Mild Nights
If you’re a fan of fall weather, next week is for you — at least during the day. Highs will stay below average, ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s Monday through Friday. It’ll feel crisp and cool during your commute and workday.
