On July 19, 1863, Brig. Gen. John Wynn Davidson’s Union cavalry crossed the St. Francis River at Chalk Bluff into Arkansas, beginning a movement down Crowley’s Ridge during the Little Rock Campaign. The 6,000-man column was responding to reports that Confederate Maj. Gen. Sterling Price might move north toward Missouri.
