Peter Van Green, an Arkansas Confederate officer, fought in the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. After Col. Thomas H. Murray was killed during the battle, Confederate commander William J. Hardee appointed Green colonel by special order. Green subsequently commanded a consolidated Arkansas regiment through the Franklin-Nashville Campaign later that year.
The Hot Spring County Court issued the decree incorporating the city of Malvern on July 22, 1876. The community had developed near the Cairo and Fulton Railroad and was named for Malvern Hill in Virginia. Samuel Henry Emerson, who operated Malvern’s first dry-goods store, became the city’s first mayor.
