LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences announced Thursday that it is purchasing the Proton Center of Arkansas, a move officials say will secure the future of proton therapy in the state and allow new patients to begin treatment immediately.
UAMS Chancellor Dr. C. Lowry Barnes said the university has reached an agreement with the center’s bondholders to purchase the facility, making UAMS the sole owner of the proton therapy center.
“I am excited to share with you all that the bondholders for the debt on Proton International Arkansas have accepted our offer to purchase the Proton Center,” Barnes said. “UAMS will become the sole owner of the proton machine, and our proton therapy will be managed by UAMS just like our photon therapy in the UAMS Radiation Oncology Center.”…
