Family Matters
Scott Hilburn did not spend too much time worrying about what area of law he would go into after graduation. He picked up a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, staying in town to attend the U of A School of Law and earn his Juris Doctor in 2010. He then joined Hilburn & Harper, the North Little Rock firm co-founded by his father. Family law, Hilburn said, happened to be an area where the firm needed more hands.
“While I practice in other areas, such as general counsel work and some civil litigation, family law has always made up the majority of my practice,” he said. “My father had a prosperous family law practice for over 50 years, and I started sitting second chair on his cases fresh out of law school. I am also a certified domestic relations mediator, and that area of my practice has significantly increased over the past five years.”
Though divorce is first to mind for many when thinking of family law, the scope of practice for Hilburn, who made partner in 2016, varies widely, from guardianships and paternity cases to adoptions and prenuptial agreements.
