On May 5, 1878, the James Newton Smithee-John D. Adams duel — often described as Arkansas’s last duel — occurred on May 5, 1878 on Markham Street in Little Rock, growing from a rivalry between their respective newspapers. Smithee was shot but survived – the men later became good friends.
