Megastorm that could dump 15-inches of rain in some spots hurls towards California, forecasters warn

The National Weather Service Los Angeles office has issued a stern warning for Southern California, signaling a significant and very dangerous threat of widespread flash flooding from Sunday into Monday, particularly south of Point Conception.

While the main frontal band has moved eastward, it has left behind a moderately unstable air mass capable of producing scattered showers and the potential for isolated thunderstorms with brief periods of heavy rain. The focus for additional precipitation will be in and near the mountains, southern Los Angeles County, as well as San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara Counties. The snow level is anticipated to drop to around 4500 feet, with a 10% chance of light snow at the pass level on the Grapevine.

Friday and Saturday are expected to remain relatively dry for most areas, except for scattered light showers in the mountains and north of Point Conception. Gusty west winds up to 40 mph are forecasted along the coast south of Point Conception, accompanied by cooler overnight temperatures in the 30s and 40s for coastal and valley areas.
