LAUSD Moves Forward With Hundreds of Layoffs

The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education voted Thursday to eliminate 657 positions — primarily in the district’s central office — as part of a broader cost-saving effort aimed at addressing worsening budget challenges. Meanwhile, hundreds of additional employees without tenure or union protections are also expected to lose their jobs through separate staffing reductions and layoffs.

The vote was 5-2, with board members Rocío Rivas and Karla Griego voting against the cuts.

At the same meeting, trustees reviewed a new “fiscal stability plan” that proposes cutting $3.6 billion from LAUSD’s budget over the next three years. The plan could eliminate at least 6,000 positions, or roughly 10% of the district’s workforce, while also reducing employee compensation and potentially forcing some schools to close or consolidate…
