The most frightening violence is sometimes the kind that begins behind a closed front door before the public ever sees the danger. California is now facing a painful stretch of deadly family violence cases that have left children dead, parents grieving, and communities asking how a private crisis can turn so quickly into a public tragedy.
The recent cases in Canoga Park, North Hills, and San Diego are not identical, and investigators have not connected them to a single case. Still, together they show why families, neighbors, schools, and local agencies must treat domestic violence warning signs as urgent.
A Canoga Park Birthday Gathering Turned Deadly
Inside the home, police found the boys and their father dead from gunshot wounds.
Authorities said the shooting appeared domestic, and investigators continued working to determine what led to the violence. Reports said the boys’ mother heard sounds from another room and went to check what was happening. Police said the father fired at her but missed before taking his own life.
The scene left neighbors stunned because it unfolded in a residential area near Lanark Park. A place connected to families, children, and everyday neighborhood life became the center of grief within minutes.
North Hills Had Already Faced Another Family Tragedy
The Canoga Park case came soon after another deadly family case in North Hills. On 5/27/2026, Los Angeles police responded to a home on Londelius Street after a shooting report. Authorities said they found a mother, her husband, and their two young children dead inside the home.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the family members as Marine Basmajian, Khajag Basmajian, Alec Basmajian, and baby Ella Basmajian. Police said the case was being treated as a murder suicide. The medical examiner listed the deaths of the husband and children as homicides, while the mother’s death was listed as suicide.
The North Hills case shocked many people because it involved an infant and a toddler. It also showed how quickly a household crisis can become irreversible when a gun is involved.
San Diego Case Shows A Different Kind Of Domestic Violence Risk
In San Diego, police said a pregnant teen visiting from Arizona was shot on 5/30/2026 outside a short-term rental on Gardena Avenue. Officers said the teen was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital. Doctors performed an emergency cesarean delivery after the shooting…
