6th Street Bridge reopening after man climbs arch, refuses to come down

A man who prompted an hourslong road closure Friday when he climbed atop an arch on the 6th Street Bridge and refused to come down has been safely taken into custody.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the area near 1499 E. Sixth St. at about 8:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a person threatening to jump.

Sky5 was over the scene at 9:30 a.m., where the man could be seen walking along the top of one of the bridge’s famed arches.

At one point, fire crews extended a truck ladder to reach him. Instead of climbing down, the man appeared to shake the ladder, gesture aggressively toward rescuers below and walk away. He was also seen starting a fire on top of the arch, possibly burning his shirt…
