Louisville police officer Nathan Stotts has resigned, according to a statement from the Louisville Metro Police Department Monday afternoon.
Stotts shot and killed Martin Nitzken Jr. at the end of May. Nitzken was naked, unarmed and believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. Days after the shooting, LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey announced he was starting the process of firing Stotts. Jefferson County prosecutors are also reviewing the case for potential criminal charges.
“This is not an acceptable performance for us. This does not meet our training, it is not what we teach and it does not meet our values,” Humphrey said last Tuesday at a press conference releasing body camera footage from the shooting.
