Louisville medical expert emphasizes safe gun storage on ASK Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — Firearm injuries continue to be the leading cause of death for children in the United States. On Sunday, medical experts participated in what’s known as “ASK Day,” spreading the word about one question that could help change that.

Norton Children’s Emergency Medicine Doctor Naomi Warnick said she had already treated several children with gunshot wounds this year. She said many of these cases were accidental.

“It’s developmentally appropriate for them to play with this new thing that they found, and they accidentally discharge it and shoot themselves or a family member or friend, which can cause very significant injuries or death,” she said.
