JCPS audit: Students falling behind, teachers leaving as district faces academic and financial crisis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A 500-page special examination of Jefferson County Public Schools by the Kentucky State Auditor’s Office finds students are falling behind at a steady pace while teachers are leaving the district in large numbers.

State Auditor Allison Ball’s office interviewed more than 230 people and surveyed another 26,000 to produce the report.

Academic performance declining

The audit finds two-thirds of Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) schools are now rated in the two lowest grades in the state. JCPS students are also performing worse on 4th-grade reading and 8th-grade math and reading tests when compared to similar districts across the country.

Auditors visited 44 JCPS classrooms and found only 59% of teachers provided high-quality instructional resources. The report also points to a widespread use of Chromebooks in the classroom, which Ball called problematic…
