A 41-year-old Sellersburg woman was killed Saturday evening when a deer darted into the path of the motorcycle she was riding on a rural stretch of Washington County road, throwing both riders from the bike after it flipped. Brooke McKinley was pronounced dead at the scene, while the motorcycle’s operator, 45-year-old Jason Smith of Corydon, was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
According to the Washington County Indiana Sheriff’s Department, emergency crews were dispatched around 5 p.m. Saturday to the area of 8459 E. Blue River Road, a rural corridor of farmland and wooded terrain in Polk Township near New Pekin. Smith was traveling eastbound on Blue River Road when, per his own statement to investigators, a deer struck the front of his motorcycle. He told authorities he applied the brakes but was unable to keep the bike from flipping over, ejecting both riders.
McKinley was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Washington County Ambulance Service, which responded alongside the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Pierce/Polk Volunteer Fire Department, and the Washington County Coroner’s Office. Neither rider was wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s department noted. Captain Joseph Keltner is leading the investigation, assisted by Deputy Ryan Ater, with the Indiana State Police also assisting in the probe.
No Helmet Requirement for Adult Riders Under Indiana Law
Indiana law does not require licensed adult riders to wear a helmet.
