A Kentucky Derby fan who fulfilled his “dying wish” to attend the nation’s premier horse race for the 80th time has died.
Louisville resident Bob Weihe, nicknamed ‘Derby Bob’, first attended the Churchill Downs event in 1947 at just nine years old. He hadn’t missed a single running of the race since, even during the Covid pandemic, but this year the 89-year-old was receiving hospice care and was mostly bedridden.
CBS News contributor David Begnaud brought attention to Weihe’s desire to make one last trip to Churchill Downs to watch the 152nd edition of the ‘Run for the Roses’ on social media. Elsewhere in horse racing, a bug infestation has caused a racecourse to lose multiple fixtures.
