You learn a surprising number of life skills living in Lubbock that you’ve probably never really even thought about. It wasn’t until I moved up to northern Minnesota that I saw firsthand just how important those life skills really were.
Here are just a couple of skills I learned growing up in Lubbock that I think everyone needs more of:
Giving Directions
For starters, we are all experts here in giving directions to people like “just turn by where the old Hastings’ was” or “turn right after the cotton gin.”
We have a really simple layout in Lubbock. Big old grid system. Directions like this are rather simple here. No need for a GPS. I think we all have a better sense of direction because of it.
Waving At Strangers
This may seem silly, but the ability to wave and be friendly with strangers is a skill most of us developed right here in Lubbock. People don’t tend to do it the way we do. We are ULTRA friendly to strangers. I really missed Lubbock when I had car trouble in Minnesota. People didn’t stop to help me the way they do here.
Resourcefulness
Lubbock teaches you to use what you have and not complain about what you don’t. We don’t have all of the fluff you’ll find in big cities, but we do just fine with what’s around. In fact, it might even make us more creative. Perhaps “creativity” should have made this list, too.
Patience
Whether you’re waiting in line at the grocery store or stuck in traffic after a bad flood, Lubbock teaches us quite a bit about how to be patient. We also spend a lot of time waiting for things. Waiting for restaurants to open. Waiting for bands to come to town. Waiting for someone to fill in a pothole. Patience is key in the Hub City.
Helpfulness
The most important skill you’ll learn here is how to help people. Neighbor having a bad week? Mom going through another round of chemo? Someone here will help you out with a meal or even just a little company. We help one another here, whether we know eachother or not. We are helpers…
