LUBBOCK, Texas Have you heard of ‘Flock Cameras’? It is an automatic license plate reader where it takes a photo of every single car that drives past one.
In 2025, the City Council voted unanimously to approve the placement of Flock Cameras around the city, and LPD said there are 14 cameras in Lubbock; this does not include the county.

The cameras are stationary and cannot be moved or turned in a different direction, and that since installing the cameras, it has helped the department solve various crime cases. The photo is stored in the department’s database for 30 days.
“We do not maintain a central repository of that information. It’s on a 30-day rotation. So once the 30 days elapse, then that information is no longer within the system, unless it’s tied specifically to a felonious criminal act or the location again of an endangered person,” said Lubbock Police Department’s Chief, Seth Herman.
“In fact, there are at least a couple of murders that we’ve experienced in the last couple of years here and in Lubbock that had it not been for the Flock system, I don’t know that we would have ever solved them,” said Herman…
