Martinez-Garcia: A call to serve on Lubbock city boards, commissions

Growing up, I recall my father attending meetings at City Hall. I was very intuitive and asked him where he was going, who he was meeting with, and what he was meeting about. He shared that he was serving on a City board and that he was giving input about needs from our neighborhood and the families that lived there. I can still recall some of the names he mentioned.More so, I can recall how proud I was of my dad even though I didn’t fully understand the concept of serving on boards and commissions. I was so inspired by his example. I’ve always answered the call of service, even serving on the Parks & Recreation board – as a board member and as the chair. It ignited me to become a lifelong advocate for Parks & Recreation. Now, I serve as your District 1 Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem, and I continue to be committed to service above self. The City of Lubbock continues to invite its citizens to serve their community and provide input in the decisions being made. We need people of all backgrounds, with different viewpoints, to reserve their seat at the table and join us in improving the needs of our city. There are 47 permanent boards and commissions in the City of Lubbock. That means there are 47 opportunities for you to exercise your voice and make a difference in your community.
