Illinois driver charged with OWI in Wisconsin after falling asleep behind the wheel

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – A woman from Illinois was arrested by officers in Columbia County early Friday morning for impairment after she fell asleep behind the wheel and then subsequently initiated a reckless pursuit, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

On July 10 at around 4:30 a.m., a Sergeant with the Columbia County Sheriff’s office noticed a vehicle stopped in the roadway on County Highway C south of the Village of Rio. Upon further inspection, the Sergeant saw that the driver was asleep behind the wheel, with the vehicle still in drive.

The Sergeant was also able to detect that there was an odor of THC coming from the vehicle. To prevent harm coming to the driver or any other motorists on the road, the Sergeant placed a tire deflation device under the back tire. The Sergeant then woke the driver, who immediately sped off, prompting a pursuit.

The driver reportedly drove erratically for several miles, at one point leaving the roadway completely and almost hitting a parked vehicle. The driver eventually pulled over and was taken into custody without further incident. Additional deputies responded to the scene to assist…
