Letter | Income article may not tell the whole story

Dear Editor: Thank you for the enlightening cover story about how people in the Madison area are coping with their not always sufficient salaries and wages (“We asked Madison: How much money do you make?” Aug. 22).

I’d like to comment on one of the responders to your survey: Mr. Information Technology, “a white, middle-aged male,” who works in an office and had “enough money to buy a house and support (his) wife who doesn’t work.”

I’m going to guess that his wife does work. She just doesn’t get paid for her housekeeping and child-rearing responsibilities. If Mr. IT had to pay for those services, particularly childcare, he might not be able to afford a house, a situation several of your struggling responders have found themselves in. L…
