Newspaper readers across the country were introduced last week to David Crowley. Wisconsin’s Democratic nominee for governor was featured in an Associated Press report on the eight Black men and women who are major-party contenders for governorships across the country.
Like Crowley, most of the contenders would make history by winning their respective races this fall. As the AP explained after he won the Aug. 11 Democratic primary: “Crowley became the first Black person to win a major party nomination for Wisconsin governor. Now he’s vying to become the first Black governor of the state and just the fourth Black governor elected in the country’s history.”
