With Madison’s downtown area planning process underway, city officials are evaluating how to improve traffic safety and better accommodate different modes of transportation, including a potential passenger rail station for the first time in decades.

Madison’s revamp of the Downtown Area Plan — a document meant to guide decisions around growth, development, infrastructure, business, programs and investment in the coming years — began in December. The plan would be the fifth of 12 area plans to be completed after the City Council unanimously adopted new plans for the southeast and southwest areas this summer…
