Historic Cooksville Trust receives $1,000

The Historic Cooksville Trust received a $1,000 grant from Alliant Energy to support the Waucoma Preserve, a three-acre prairie in Cooksville.

The funds will support maintenance such as mowing paths in and around the prairie, weed control and other annual work to support a healthy prairie. In addition, funds will support a free program on prairies and a seed collecting workshop on Sat., Oct. 10 at 1 pm at the Cooksville Community Center (former schoolhouse), 11204 N Church St., at the corner with Hwy 59), Cooksville.

“This generous gift will provided needed support for maintaining and improving our still very young prairie. Keeping paths mowed and weeds controlled is critical to helping our prairie grow and enabling a wide variety of flowers and grasses to flourish” said Mary Zimmerman, Historic Cooksville Trust Board Chair. “In addition, it will allow us to provide a free workshop on Prairie Seed Basics by Steve Glass, a restoration ecologist and prairie expert. Following the workshop, participants will do some seed collecting at the Waucoma Preserve as well as Danky-Schelshorn Prairie just north of Cooksville”…
