Wisconsin Beagle Facility Confrontation Draws National Attention as Protest and Policing Collide

A rural research facility in southern Wisconsin became the center of a national flashpoint on April 18, as a large demonstration over the use of animals in biomedical research escalated into a physical confrontation between activists and law enforcement.

The incident unfolded at Ridglan Farms, a licensed breeding facility that raises beagles for scientific and medical testing. Authorities estimate that roughly one thousand individuals gathered near the property, with several hundred attempting to move beyond designated protest areas and gain entry to the secured site. Law enforcement responded with crowd control measures, including pepper spray and rubber projectiles, after determining that the situation had crossed from demonstration into active breach attempts.

Officials with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office reported that between 300 and 400 individuals pushed toward fences and barriers, with some attempting to force their way through physical obstacles designed to secure the facility. Arrests were made throughout the day, including individuals identified as organizers, and one person was taken into custody after driving a vehicle through a gate.
