Former Kmart on East State Street could become global market and food hall

ROCKFORD — A shuttered Kmart on East State Street could be transformed into an international grocery market and food hall that includes a bakery, buffet, fresh produce and multiple food vendors.

Alderman Mark Bonne announced the plans on Sunday with Guanming Shi and James Jiang, who plan to replicate their existing Global Market & Food Hall in Madison, Wisconsin. Bonne said they have a deal with U-Haul, which owns the property at State Street and Mulford Road, to purchase it for nearly $6.5 million.
