ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A Winnebago County judge has found Tyris S. Jones guilty of First Degree Murder with a firearm enhancement in connection with a 2020 fatal shooting on Rockford’s west side, bringing a years‑long case involving a high‑profile police shooting, protests, and multiple court proceedings to a close.
According to the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office, Jones was convicted following a bench trial before Judge Jennifer Clifford for the killing of 25‑year‑old De’mavalee Macklin.
2020 shooting
The case stems from a September 26, 2020 shooting in the 1000 block of Furman Street. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert and found Macklin dead inside a vehicle that had been struck multiple times by gunfire.
