Madison families to join teachers at ‘A Day Without Immigrants’ protest

When Karen Urrutia Polnitz learned the Madison school district is canceling classes Friday, after the teachers union voted to participate in the “A Day Without Immigrants” protest, she felt overwhelmingly grateful.

As the daughter of an immigrant and the parent of a first grader in Madison schools, Urrutia Polnitz knew she wanted to participate in the protest with her child. She already planned to take off work and pull her kid out of school, so the canceled classes were “welcome news.”

“The past year or so has been really challenging to witness what’s going on in our country and in our communities,” she said. “As a family where immigration is part of our reality … the actions taking place in our country right now have real consequences. It’s really beautiful to see our teachers move in solidarity with their students in this.”…
