A routine evening at a Memphis Walmart turned chaotic when a woman sitting in her 2013 Audi A4 became the unintended victim of a gunshot discharged from a nearby vehicle. Authorities say the incident occurred when a 23-year-old man accidentally fired a gun through his own hand, with the bullet piercing her car. The bizarre sequence of events has prompted questions about firearm safety, reckless behavior, and public security in commercial areas.
The Incident: From Parking Lot to Police Report
According to court records and police reports, the woman was seated outside the Walmart on Austin Peay Highway around 7 p.m. when she heard a sudden gunshot. Investigators confirmed that the rear passenger door of her Audi had been struck, and a bullet fragment was recovered from inside the vehicle.
Witness accounts indicated that the shot originated from a white Chevrolet sedan parked nearby. Officers observed that the driver appeared to have sustained a hand injury. The man subsequently left the scene, heading to a local hospital for treatment.
Suspect Identified and Charges Filed
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Elijah Jones, was later located at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand. Police discovered a 2017 white Chevrolet Impala registered to Jones, containing a 10mm Smith & Wesson M&P handgun on the front passenger seat and a spent shell casing on the floorboard.
Court documents indicate that Jones claimed the firearm discharged while he was retrieving it from beneath the driver’s seat, striking his own hand. He was charged with reckless endangerment for discharging a firearm from a vehicle. He was booked into Shelby County Jail with a $100,000 bond.
