MPD: Woman fraudulently sells house, takes $2K from victim

BARTLETT, Tenn. — Memphis Police say a woman scammed a potential homebuyer out of $2,000 by trying to sell her a Bartlett house she didn’t own.

Sumar Walker, 60, was booked in the Shelby County Jail on Monday on a charge of theft of property. She is accused of taking $2,000 in earnest money from the victim for the purchase of a house in the 3100 block of Rosebay Lane.

According to the affidavit, the victim completed a contract and gave Walker a certified check for the earnest money. The victim said she had to pull out of the deal after a home inspector told her there were too many repairs for her FHA loan.

The Memphis victim contacted MPD when she couldn’t get her money back, and that’s when police discovered Walker did not have permission to sell the property.

“She wrote a contract and took the money. My signature was never placed there in any way,” said the trustee of the property. “Unfortunately, yes, that poor woman who put up her money was too trusting.”
