Man accused of shooting at Mississippi police officers arrested hours later in Missouri

Sixteen hours after a man allegedly shot at police officers in northern Mississippi during a traffic stop, authorities in Springfield apprehended the suspect Monday near the Bass Pro Shops Anglers Lodge hotel.

Police in Olive Branch, Mississippi, said Colby A. Towles, 34, fired shots at officers who were conducting a traffic stop about 1:30 a.m. Monday on Highway 302. Towles, who was stopped by police while riding his motorcycle, allegedly approached the officers and yelled at them before driving off.

Towles, according to police, then made a U-turn on his Harley Davidson, drove toward the officers and allegedly proceeded to fire shots toward them. One of the officers returned fire, the department said.

No officers were injured in the shooting. Towles faces two counts of aggravated assault on an officer for the shooting with the possibility of additional charges for fleeing.

Authorities in Springfield said they learned at 4:53 p.m. Monday that Towles was in the Springfield area and located the man. Several U.S. Marshals and Springfield police officers responded to the call, and Towles surrendered without incident.
