Woman killed by DUI driver after vehicle breakdown: MPD

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say an impaired driver has been charged with vehicular homicide after he hit and killed a woman standing behind her disabled vehicle on Union Avenue Thursday night.

Daniel Thomas, 67, is also charged with Driving Under the Influence, Public Intoxication, Reckless Driving, and Driving without a license or insurance.

According to investigators, just before 9 p.m. Thomas was traveling eastbound on Union Avenue in the far-right lane and struck the victim, who was standing outside the rear of her vehicle.

Police said the victim’s vehicle was inoperable, and witnesses said she had her flashers on at the time.

An officer on the scene said that Thomas admitted to having a lot of drinks, and the officer could smell a strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage…
