AMERICANS could be hit with hefty fines and even jail time under strict new restrictions just days before Fourth of July celebrations.

The crackdown brings some of the toughest penalties seen in years, with authorities warning they now have stronger powers to punish anyone caught breaking the rules.

The changes take effect on June 20 in Phoenix, Arizona, after city leaders approved a major overhaul of regulations covering when and where fireworks can be used.
