Mesa OKs FBI pact over citizen objections

Mesa will partner with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to go after drug traffickers, murderers and other dangerous criminals, despite opposition from some residents already wary of the city’s agreement with Immigration Customers Enforcement.

Council last week wholeheartedly approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to participate in the FBI’s Phoenix Safe Streets Task Force, which includes other Valley law enforcement agencies that pool their resources to tackle violent crime.

“This is to deal with and to prosecute the worst violent crimes that happen in our city – murder, rape, drive-by shooting, robbery, kidnapping both of adults and kids,” said Ken Cost, assistant city manager. “This is an item that formalizes a relationship that the Mesa Police Department already has with the FBI.”…
