To really start over, formerly incarcerated women need jobs. Criminal records make it harder

When a woman is released from prison, the roadmap back is complicated. But to really start over, she needs a job. For women with a criminal record, that can be difficult.

Mary Clifton is sitting in a portable building at Perryville prison in metro Phoenix. Her hair is tied back in two braids, and she’s wearing a bright orange long-sleeve shirt and matching pants.

“I was on drugs a lot of my life, so I didn’t really have a goal or a plan,” she explains. “But now that I’m here, I have more focus.”…
