Fun things to do on Labor Day weekend in Phoenix if you’re staying in town

Crowded highways and skies are expected for the unofficial end of summer.

The Transportation Security Administration anticipates screening more than 17 million people at airports nationwide from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4 over the Labor Day weekend. AAA forecasted a 9% increase in domestic travel for the holiday weekend compared to 2023.

Many people in metro Phoenix will choose to stay home rather than battle crowded highways and clogged airports. If you’re among them, there are plenty of ways to have fun in town.

Highlights include one of the Southwest’s largest anime conventions, a nighttime tour of a popular outdoor destination, and lounging by hotel pools.

Saboten Con

Arizona’s largest anime convention, whose name is derived from the Japanese word for cactus, Saboten Con welcomes fans of anime and Japanese culture for a weekendlong event. Saboten Con will include appearances from J-pop singers, cosplayers and anime voice actors and artists.
