Gilbert Council narrowly OKs strip mall rezoning

Big-box retailer Target will soon be coming to a 16-acre parcel on the southeast corner of Higley and Ocotillo roads after the Gilbert Town Council approved a controversial rezoning.

Dubbing it the Higley and Ocotillo Retail Center, developer SimonCRE had requested to change the plot’s original zoning of “shopping center” to “general commercial” to allow a stand-alone building over 75,000 square feet.

Gilbert’s land development code standards limit the single building size in shopping center designations to 75,000 square feet, whereas the general commercial will allow the developers to build a 128,660-square-foot Target store…
