Rodents gnaw cabbage, roaches crawl on food prep tables; 13 businesses ordered shut

It was a particularly rough stretch for cleanliness and food safety at restaurants and food stores across South Florida.

Inspectors recently ordered 13 establishments shut, finding everything from rodent droppings and live roaches, to hundreds of flies, mold-like buildup, filthy equipment and food held at unsafe temperatures.

At Yellow Tail Subs Grill in Homestead, inspectors documented 32 violations, including live roaches crawling across a food-preparation table, among cleaned containers, and even out of a box of parchment paper used to wrap food; more than 100 roach droppings were found on a shelf…
