Miami man gets probation for reckless boating

A 34-year-old Miami man was adjudicated guilty and sentenced by County Judge Sharon Hamilton following a no contest plea to the first-degree misdemeanor offense of reckless operation of a vessel resulting in a boating crash in Key Largo that left multiple passengers injured, according to the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office.

Hamilton sentenced William Christopher Stein to 12 months of probation, as the victims requested no jail time. As part of the sentence, Stein was ordered to pay $9,193 in court costs, assessments, fines, prosecution costs and restitution. He was also required to complete an advanced boating safety course.

The court also imposed a suspended 30-day jail sentence and prohibited Stein from fishing or diving in Monroe County waters during probation except for employment-related activities. Should Stein violate the terms of his probation, the court may impose the suspended 30-day jail sentence…
